Motel Ignores Easement Rule Violation Notice Despite Deadline

In a recent development concerning the Mahiga River easement rule in Cebu City, Queensland Motel has chosen to disregard official notices and deadlines issued by Task Force Gubat sa Baha, the city's anti-flood task force.

Charles Villagonzalo, head of operations for Task Force Gubat sa Baha, reported that as of Sunday, July 7, Queensland Motel has neither responded to nor visited their office. In contrast, Lite Shipping Company has begun cooperating following a 72-hour deadline issued on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

The task force issued a final 72-hour deadline on July 2, expiring on July 4, urging the establishments to voluntarily remove encroachments on the riverbank. Lite Shipping Company's engineer has since visited the task force office with a lot plan for discussions, indicating ongoing cooperation.

In stark contrast, Queensland Motel has not engaged with the task force at any level, prompting uncertainties about their compliance. Villagonzalo expressed concern over Queensland Motel's lack of communication, highlighting potential consequences but refraining from speculation.

City authorities previously indicated readiness to undertake demolition should private establishments fail to comply with the easement rules, underscoring the critical nature of these enforcement measures in mitigating flood risks.

Task Force Gubat sa Baha initiated violation notices on June 18 after discovering encroachments by Lite Shipping Company and Queensland Motel. Similar notices have been issued to other private establishments along Colon St., underscoring the broader scope of the city's regulatory efforts.

Efforts to enforce easement regulations along the Mahiga River reflect the City Government's proactive stance in addressing flood vulnerabilities. Despite Lite Shipping Company's cooperation, Queensland Motel's lack of response poses challenges and potential consequences as city officials await further developments.

Attempts to reach retired Major General Melquiades Feliciano, head of Task Force Gubat sa Baha, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of this writing, indicating ongoing developments in the situation.
