Tragedy Strikes in Carmen, Cebu: Pregnant Woman and 12-Year-Old Boy Found Dead
The devastating Carmen tragedy claimed the lives of Rhesamie Ypil Costan, 26, who was six months pregnant, and 12-year-old Nathaniel Lozano, after their pickup truck carrying 17 passengers was swept by flash floods in Barangay Luyang, Carmen town, northern Cebu.
The body of Rhesamie Ypil Costan was discovered by fishermen off the waters of Barangay Luyang, a day after the tragic incident. Costan, who was six months pregnant, had just recently married her husband, Elmer Costan.
Elmer Costan was also swept away by the strong current of the river and remains missing as of now. He was among the passengers of the Isuzu Dmax pickup truck that was hit by flash floods while traveling downhill from the mountain barangays of Carmen.
It was initially reported that the vehicle tried to cross the spillway of the river during Monday’s downpour, but later it was confirmed that the pickup truck swerved to the riverbanks when the river swelled and overflowed onto the nearby roads. As a result, the driver reportedly lost direction of the concrete road and was unaware that the vehicle had already encroached the banks before it was suddenly hit by a huge volume of flood water.
The tragic event has left 10 of the 17 passengers rescued, while search and rescue efforts continue for the remaining five passengers, including Costan’s husband and four minors.
